The Italian-looking-yet-Spanish Marcil acted in a number of theatre productions before landing the role of Brenda Barrett on the soap opera General Hospital in 1992. She garnered three Daytime Emmy Award nominations (1997, 1998 and 2003) for her portrayal, winning in 2003 as "Outstanding Supporting Actress." In February 1998, she was named "Outstanding Lead Actress" at the Soap Opera Digest Awards.
After six years on General Hospital, she left the show in 1998 (returning briefly in '03) to star in the made-for-television movie To Love, Honor and Deceive, and had a recurring guest role on the police drama High Incident produced by Steven Spielberg. Early music career

In 1977, Houston was featured as the lead vocalist on the Michael Zager Band's single "Life's a Party" and Zager later offered to obtain her a record deal but she declined. In the early-1980s, she started appearing as a fashion model in various magazine advertisements and snagged the cover of Seventeen magazine and a Canada Dry commercial. During these modeling years, she continued to balance her burgeoning singing career. She worked with producers Michael Bienhorn, Bill Laswell and Martin Bisi on an album they were spearheading called One Down, credited to the group Material. It was planned to contain eight songs, each one featuring a different lead vocalist. The album is said to include production/collaborations with Jermaine Dupri, Timbaland, Sean Garrett, R Kelly, Missy Elliott, DJ Premier, Ne-Yo, George Michael, Lil Jon and Johnta Austin; however, executive producer Clive Davis has made it clear that this will be a Whitney Houston album, focusing on her, and less on "flavor of the moment" sounds.

Film and television career

During the 1980s, as Houston was working on launching a music career, she auditioned for acting roles, including the part of Sondra Huxtable on The Cosby Show, which was won by Sabrina Le Beauf. Houston acted on episodes of Gimme a Break with Nell Carter and Silver Spoons with Rick Schroder before her debut album was released.
Houston's first film role was in The Bodyguard released in 1992 and co-starring Kevin Costner. The film was hugely successful, grossing over $121 million in the U.S. and $510 million worldwide. Controversies and personal challenges

Houston has been at the center of intense media attention and speculation about her personal life. Media coverage became more intense after her marriage to Brown, and has included speculation about her career and her marriage to Brown, as well as more unusual tabloid stories, and the recent revelation that Osama bin Laden was preoccupied with Houston.

Shortly before the release of Whitney: The Greatest Hits in April 2000, airport security discovered several grams of marijuana in Houston and husband Bobby Brown's luggage at a Hawaiian airport, but they boarded the plane and departed before police could arrive. Charges were later dropped against her and Brown but other rumors about drug use developed around the couple, and Houston became well known in the industry for canceling appearances. Shortly before the December 2002 release of Just Whitney, Houston gave an interview with Diane Sawyer (where she discussed drug allegations and marital issues). Houston entered drug rehabilitation facilities in March 2004 and again in March 2005.
Tabloid media and traditional news outlets reported in early 2006 that Houston was again fighting drug addiction. The National Enquirer published pictures of a bathroom (purportedly Houston's) littered with drug paraphernalia, and credited the pictures to Tina Brown (Bobby Brown's sister). Tina Brown also said that there were holes drilled in the walls of her apartment so Houston could see if anyone was entering. The story has received substantial coverage in the media.

John Houston dispute

Houston became involved in a dispute with her father, John Houston. In 2002, John Houston's company sued his daughter for $100 million, stating that they were owed the money for helping to guide her career, as well as helping Houston manage the controversies surrounding her career. Both of them appeared on television and disputed the other's claims. John Houston died in February 2003. His daughter attended a wake for her father, but did not attend his funeral.

Health concerns

In addition to the allegations about drug abuse, Houston's appearance has led to speculation that she was anorexic, had an eating disorder, or experienced weight loss in conjunction with the drug usage. In particular, Houston's appearance at the 30th anniversary concert for singer Michael Jackson elicited a strong response.

Since Professor Thurman moved between various universities, the family often relocated when Uma was a child. She grew up mostly in Amherst, Massachusetts and Woodstock, New York. After Mad Dog and Glory, Thurman auditioned for Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Tarantino originally had no intention of casting her, after seeing her performance in Glory, but ultimately decided to cast her after having dinner with her: “And Uma and I were doing that scene. We were living the movie, all right? Early life

Born in Sherman Oaks, California to David Olsen (b. 1953) and Jarnette (Jarnie) Fuller (b. 1954), the Olsen twins, Mary Kate and Ashley Fuller Olsen, started their acting careers on the television series Full House in 1987. Hired at the age of five months, filming began when they were seven months old. The show was widely popular during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and both sisters played one character, Michelle Tanner, taking turns during the tapings to do so, in order to comply with strict child labor laws regarding child actors. For the first year, Ashley would cry everytime she was brought on set to do a scene so Mary-Kate had more screen time in the first season. Outside No Doubt, Stefani has collaborated on the singles "South Side" and "Let Me Blow Ya Mind" with Moby and Eve respectively. In 2002 Eve and Stefani won a "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration" for "Let Me Blow Ya Mind".

2004-2006: Love. Angel. Music. Baby

Stefani's debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. was released in November 2004 across the world. The album debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 albums chart at number seven, selling more than 310,000 copies in its first week. In early 2005 it peaked at number five in the U.S., number three in Canada and number one in Australia. It had major success in Mexico, where it became the highest-selling English album for more than a month and peaked at number two for several weeks.
Stefani collaborated with singer-songwriter Linda Perry of 4 Non Blondes on the album, along with The Neptunes, OutKast's André 3000, and Dallas Austin among others. The first single released from the album was "What You Waiting For?", which was a top twenty success across Asia, Australia and Europe, but was less successful in North America.

"Rich Girl" was released as the album's second single; a duet with rapper Eve, and produced by Dr. Dre, it is an adaptation of a 1990s pop song by British musicians Louchie Lou and Michie, which itself is a cover of "If I Were a Rich Man", from the musical Fiddler on the Roof, written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. "Rich Girl" proved successful on several formats, and reached the UK and U.S. top ten. Love. Angel. Music. Baby.'s third single "Hollaback Girl" became Stefani's first U.S. and second Australian number-one single; it was less successful elsewhere. The song was the first U.S. digital download to sell more than one million copies legally, and its brass-driven composition remained popular throughout 2005. Its lyrical content features the word "shit" thirty-seven times.
The fourth single "Cool" was released shortly following the popularity of its predecessor, but failed to match its chart success, reaching the UK and U.S. top twenty. However, "Cool" was Stefani's first Canadian number-one single. The song's music video, filmed in Lake Como, Italy, depicts Stefani's former relationship with No Doubt bass guitarist Tony Kanal. The song's music video shows Stefani paying homage to her Italian heritage as well as the 1950s bombshells. "Luxurious" was released as the album's fifth single, but did not perform as well as its predecessors. "Crash" was released as the album's sixth single in early 2006 in lieu of the production of Love. Angel. Music. Baby. sequel, which Stefani postponed because of her pregnancy.
Stefani received five Grammy Award nominations on December 8 2005. She was nominated in five categories: "Album of the Year", "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance", "Best Pop Vocal Album", "Record of the Year" and "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration".

Gwen Stefani Harajuku Girls

The release of Stefani's first solo album brought attention to her entourage of four Harajuku Girls. Named Love, Angel, Music, and Baby by Stefani, the Harajuku Girls are named for the area around the Harajuku Station of Tokyo, Japan, known as a popular shopping destination and fashion center for teenagers. Following the style of their namesake area, Stefani's Harajuku Girls are usually flamboyantly dressed (sometimes in a somewhat "Gothic Lolita" style). They were featured in her music videos, press coverage and on the album cover for Love. Angel. Music. Baby., and have a song dedicated to them on the album. However, Stefani's adoption of this Japanese culture component drew criticism from Mihi Ahn at Salon.com, and others who feel that Stefani has stripped Japanese street fashion of its authenticity and created yet another example of the "submissive Asian female" stereotype. According to the Jan/Feb 2006 edition of Blender magazine, stand-up comic Margaret Cho has labeled the Harajuku Girls as a "minstrel show" that reinforces ethnic stereotypes of Asian women. The Harajuku Girls have since continued to appear alongside Stefani within the media, and are featured in the music video for "Wind It Up" (2006).

2006-present: The Sweet Escape

Stefani's second solo album The Sweet Escape (2006) was released on December 4 2006 outside North America and on December 5 2006 in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Stefani recollaborated with Tony Kanal, Linda Perry and the Neptunes on some tracks and also worked with Akon ("The Sweet Escape", on which he is featured) and Tim Rice-Oxley ("Early Winter"). The album includes twelve songs. The album concided with the DVD release of Stefani's first tour, entitled Harajuku Lovers Live. It is available in two versions: edited and explicit.
Along with the announcement of her upcoming album and DVD release in late 2006, Stefani announced on her official website that she will be embarking on an international tour starting in April 2007. This tour will visit North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Official tour dates have since been announced on Stefani's official website.

Non-musical projects

Stefani has created a successful fashion line, named L.A.M.B., which showcases clothing that Stefani is often seen wearing herself. The line also includes handbags and purses. Celebrities such as Nicky Hilton, Pamela Anderson, and Carmen Electra have been seen sporting her fashion line and LeSportsac bags. No Doubt bassist (and former boyfriend) Tony Kanal donated an X-Ray of his broken finger as an image for L.A.M.B T-shirts. In fall of 2006, Gwen Stefani will release a limited edtion line of dolls dubbed "Gwen Stefani Fashion Dolls." Stefani will release a Limited Edition series of eight dolls entitled Love. Angel. Music. Baby. Inspired by her multi-platinum album and tour, each doll will reflect Gwen's eclectic onstage incarnations. Ranging from her Hollaback Girl to the fashion-forward Harajuku Girls of Tokyo, the dolls in this high-end line will reflect the distinctive style and personality which have made Gwen Stefani an icon. She also designed and promoted a Harajuku girl-themed camera for Hewlett-Packard.
Stefani made her acting debut playing Jean Harlow in the 2004 Martin Scorsese movie The Aviator and made a cameo appearance in the movie Zoolander. Stefani lent her voice to the title character of Malice, a PS2 and Xbox video game; before completion, however, the company opted not to use No Doubt band-members' voices.

Controversy

John Casablancas

Bündchen's rise to fame has not come without controversy. Like Heidi Klum and several other models, she moved from her original agency Elite Model Management to IMG. John Casablancas, head of Elite, accused Bündchen of being a stoner who slept her way to the top, though he has now stated that he was misquoted. . Casablancas also filed a $15 million lawsuit against her.

PETA

In 2002, during the taping of the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, Bündchen was the target of a protest made by four members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals because she was signed to be the new face of Blackglama, a fur designing company. When Bündchen was on the stage, four women jumped into the runway holding posters that read "Gisele: Fur Scum" and included the logo for PETA. Bündchen tried to ignore them while several security guards detained the protesters.

Gillian Anderson Early life

She was born in Chicago to Edward and Rosemary Anderson. Soon after her birth her family moved to Puerto Rico for fifteen months and then to Crouch End in London. When she was eleven, her family moved again, this time to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she attended Fountain Elementary and then City Middle/High School, a program for gifted students with a strong emphasis on the humanities; she graduated in 1986. With her English accent and background, she felt out of place in the American Midwest, and developed a reputation as a strong-willed and rebellious teenager. Anderson, mocked because of her British accent, soon developed a Midwest dialect. In addition, she had her nose pierced in the early 1980s, and dyed her hair various colors.
She found an outlet for her talents when she began acting in high school and community theater productions. She had wanted to be a marine biologist, but at 17 after a couple of auditions for the Grand Rapids Community Theater, she gained a few roles and never looked back. She attended Goodman Theater School of Drama at DePaul University in Chicago, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990, and a few summer schools with the National Theatre of Great Britain at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Career

Anderson moved to New York when she was twenty-two, and started her career in 'The Philanthropist' at the Long Wharf Theatre. To support herself when she started out, she worked as a waitress. Anderson did a lot of theatre work and won much critical acclaim, including a 1990-91 Theatre World Award for he role in the play 'Absent Friends' produced by Alan Ayckbourn which ran at the Manhattan Theatre Club.
She moved to Los Angeles in 1991/92, spending a year auditioning. Although she had once vowed she would never do TV, being out of work for a year changed her mind. Anderson did Home Fires Burning for a cable station as well as the audio book version of Exit to Eden. She broke into mainstream television in 1993, with a guest appearance on the collegiate drama Class of '96 on the fledgling Fox Network.
As a result of her guest appearance in Class of 96, Anderson was sent the script for The X Files at the age of 24. She decided to audition as: "for the first time in a long time the script involved a strong, independent intelligent woman as a lead character." Producer Chris Carter wanted to employ her, but FOX wanted someone with previous TV exposure and more "bimbo-like". Fox sent in more actresses, but Carter stood by Anderson, and she was cast as Special Agent Dana Scully. She got the part assuming it would run for thirteen episodes, the standard run for American TV networks. Filmed in Vancouver, the series eventually ran for nine seasons, and included one film. During her time on The X Files Anderson won several awards for her portrayal of Agent Scully, including an Emmy Award, Golden Globe and two SAG awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series. While filming she met assistant art director Clyde Klotz, whom she married. She had roles in a handful of films during the run of The X-Files and starred in The House of Mirth, an adaptation of the Edith Wharton novel of the same name.
Since The X-Files ended, she has performed in several stage productions and worked on various film projects. She has also done narrative work for documentaries on scientific topics. A few months later came the news that she was pregnant, and Chris Carter created an alien abduction storyline that kept Anderson off-camera long enough for labor, delivery, and a 10-day maternity leave. Original success

Geri Halliwell first found fame as one of the five members of the girl group the Spice Girls. The group joined the most successful musical artists of the 1990s selling over thirty-five million albums with the studio releases Spice and SpiceworldScreenshot from Brit Awards 2000 detailing the sales of The Spice Girls up to February 2000. On May 30 1998, Halliwell departed from the Spice Girls to pursue a solo career. Her actions left a great deal of controversy concerning her former band which had yet to embark on a North American tour, one they would eventually complete without Halliwell. Although she had already left the group, the Spice Girls released "Viva Forever", the final music video to feature Halliwell. After Halliwell left, the girls wrote a few songs about her on their album Forever, notably "Goodbye", "Let Love Lead the Way" and "Tell Me Why".

Solo career: Schizophonic

In 1999 Halliwell released her debut solo album Schizophonic, with lead single "Look at Me", produced by cowriters and old friends, Absolute. The single reached number two in the UK, behind Boyzone's "You Needed Me". Further singles from the album, "Mi Chico Latino" and "Lift Me Up", became UK number-ones with the latter outselling Halliwell's former bandmate Emma Bunton. The fourth single "Bag It Up" also reached number one. Demonstrating typical flair for outrageous promotion, Halliwell performed "Bag It Up" during the Brit Awards ceremony in 2000, emerging between giant inflatable legs, ripping off her shirt and walking in stilleto heels over the backs of topless pink-haired men whilst singing the song.
"Look at Me" was released to radio in the United States in late 1999, receiving limited airplay. Even more surprisingly, with only a radio single, Schizophonic debuted at number forty-two on the Billboard 200 before dropping out within the next month. This is still the highest charting by a solo Spice album in the US (Emma Bunton's Free Me peaking at #183 and Melanie C's Northern Star peaked at #208). The album was eventually certified gold, shipping over 500,000 copies (however, actually sales remain much lower). "Mi Chico Latino" did not have a big impact on US radio, and no further singles from Schizophonic or LPs were released in the United States.
Geri Halliwell had a high profile, but short lived, relationship with Chris Evans.
Halliwell has also pursued a TV career in America, re-uniting with former Spice Girls manager, Simon Fuller, to host All American Girl. She has also made appearances in the television show Sex and the City and a film, Fat Slags (2004), based on characters from Viz Magazine.

Second album: Scream If You Wanna Go Faster

In 2001 Halliwell followed up with her second album Scream If You Wanna Go Faster. It also included the Weather Girls' 1983 hit, "It's Raining Men", used on the Bridget Jones's Diary film soundtrack, and the video game, . The song also won her the International Song of the Year award at the 2002 NRJ Music Awards.
The song became a huge hit selling close to 4 million copies worldwide and becoming the 2nd best selling single in 2001 The song had been added to the album at the last minute; another song, "Feels Like Sex" had already been slated as the lead single. In the event, this song remained an album-only track, Circles round the moon was rumoured to be a single as Halliwell performed it on CD.UK, But this never happened. With the follow-up singles being "Scream If You Wanna Go Faster" (number eight) and "Calling" (number seven), the latter, stated by Halliwell was her favourite co-written track on the album. She even released a special French edition of the single, in which she sang in French, entitled "Calling (au nom de l'amour)". The album went to sell over 1.7 million copies across the world (this album wasn't released in the US). In 2003, she came ninth in the Channel 4 poll of the 100 Worst Britons.
She has released two best-selling autobiographies in 1999 and 2002, detailing her rise to fame, and her turbulent celebrity lifestyle. She has also released two Yoga DVDs which sold fairly well.
Halliwell also was featured on the UK television programme "Popstars: The Rivals" in 2002 which featured her as a judge alongside Pete Waterman and Louis Walsh. The show launched Girls Aloud.
After the stress of releasing all those projects Halliwell had announced (at the end of 'Just for the record') she may not return to music. She no longer needed fame in her life and she wasn't sure where she would go from that point. It would be another few years before she was heard from again.

Third album: Passion

In late 2004, Halliwell made a return to music with the single "Ride It", which reached number four on the UK charts and number one on the dance charts. The single was not promoted abroad but still sold well throughout Europe reaching high positions such as #4 in UK and #3 in Spain. It was the first single from her third album, Passion which was at that stage slated for a spring release after a second single. However, several months elapsed before another single was released, during which time Halliwell was apparently ordered to record some new tracks for the as-yet unreleased album by her record company, who were unhappy with the setlist. Halliwell was planning her first solo tour around the UK and Ireland, but a bad management and tour schedule plus the label's pressure to make Geri record more songs made her cancel the tour. "Desire" reached number twenty-two in the UK. Released shortly after, Passion similarly received little attention from the public or critics, and stalled at #41 in the UK Charts. It was subsequently rumoured that "Love Never Loved Me" would be released as the third single from Passion, however, this never materialized.
Since 2003, Halliwell has been in contact with the rest of the Spice Girls, and rumours of a reunion have been swirling, especially since all five members have now had singles success of some degree or another. Rumours indicated that they might perform together again in 2005, at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park, London. Initially organisers axed the idea, but after the publicity surrounding the cut, Bob Geldof stated that they would reconsider their possible attendance. However, the Spice Girls were in the end not present for the Live 8 show, the press claiming that Melanie Brown had claimed prior work commitments so she would not be present.

Personal life

In October 2005, after Passion was a failure, and the Spice Girls reunion never materialized, Halliwell fired her managers, husband and wife team Paul and Katie Conroy, and went to Los Angeles, California to work on unnamed projects. Soon after, she was photographed by the paparazzi, having put on weight and looking exhausted. Instantly, the tabloids reported that Halliwell was pregnant, which was subsequently confirmed. British scriptwriter and former drummer with the band Bush, Sacha Gervasi, is reported to be the child's father ; he made a statement saying he wished Halliwell and child the best shortly after the rumours came out. On March 7, 2006, Hello! magazine published an interview with Halliwell which did not confirm the father's identity. Halliwell said, "it is tacky to kiss and tell, I would never deprive a child of the right to know its father."
In April 2006 it was revealed that Halliwell has invited all four of her former Spice Girl colleagues to be godmothers at the christening of her baby. Victoria Beckham has already phoned Halliwell to thank her and accept the invitation. Former bandmate Emma Bunton was photographed going to Halliwell's baby shower in early May, and Melanie C was rumoured to be there as well. Melanie B was not present due to projects in America.
On May 14, 2006, Halliwell gave birth to a daughter, Bluebell Madonna, by caesarean section at London's Portland Hospital with her sister by her side. Explaining her name choice, she said, "What really clinched it for me was my mother telling me that the bluebell is increasingly rare - so it's a precious flower, which seems just right for my daughter." The future

It has been reported that Halliwell is planning to release a new tell-all book about her time in America and plans to make it as an actress. Halliwell is also returning to the recording studio, with plans to add four new tracks to a greatest hits album. "I really plan to tour at some point this year," Halliwell was quoted "Not an arena tour but somewhere small and intimate, as a thank you to fans who have stuck by me. Being a mother has made me even more focused and I like the idea of creating a whole new sound. I still have a record deal, you know."
In a November 2006 interview with Britain's OK! magazine, Halliwell said she had no musical ambitions and no desire to record another solo album. "As far as music is concerned, I feel like I've given it my best. When I see how desperate people are for that chance, I realize I've had my turn and now I have to let it go." Halliwell also stated that the Spice Girls would have reunited for the 2005 Live 8 concert, but that bandmate Melanie B pulled out. "We were all ready, apart from Mel B" Halliwell said. It is now doubtful whether a reunion will ever happen, she added. "Victoria said maybe it's time to move on and I think she's got a point," she said. "Maybe it's better to keep the Spice Girls as a memory, but never say never. A taxi driver said to me we could still do a reunion even if one of us didn't want to."

Non-musical accomplishments

In 1999, after having left the Spice Girls, Geri Halliwell became a representative for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). As a goodwill ambassador, Halliwell toured the Philippines on a fact-finding trip. Halliwell visited with staff and clients of family planning clinics, women’s groups in slum areas, and college students.
Halliwell picked up UN work again in 2006. Gena Lee Nolin was born in Duluth, Minnesota. During her childhood, Nolin lived on a farm. An athletic child, she enjoyed skating, basketball, volleyball and softball. When Nolin was 17, she dropped out of school and ran away from home because of an abusive father. She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where she worked as a waitress. She performed "Sweet About Me" on the Australian breakfast news program Sunrise on the Seven Network on 1 April 2008 and again on the talk show Rove five days later. She also performed this single on Ireland's chat show The Late Late Show on 23 May 2008.
From March to May 2008 she supported the Sugababes on their UK Change Tour, as well as supporting Nouvelle Vague. She opened for James Blunt on his June 2008 Australian tour, and participated at the MTV Greece concert in Greece on 4 October 2008 alongside R.E.M. and Kaiser Chiefs.

After "Sweet About Me" dropped to number two for several weeks on the Australian ARIA Charts, she reclaimed the number one spot on 19 May 2008. On 9 July, Cilmi's second UK single, "Save The Lies", was exclusively premiered on The Sun's website. On the 13th, the "Out Of Office Remix" was premiered on the Fresh40 chart show. Cilmi's second UK single did not show as much success as "Sweet About Me", peaking at 33 in the UK. During the release of "Save the Lies (Good To Me)" in the UK, there was a subsequent release in Australia. "Don't Wanna Go to Bed Now" did not show as much success as "Sweet About Me", peaking at 28 on the charts.

On 1 October she announced that "Sanctuary" was the fourth single. It was released on 10 November 2008 but failed to chart.

Her 2008 Christmas song was a cover of a Connie Francis song Warm This Winter, which is featured on the Co-operative's Christmas adverts, and has so far peaked at 22 in the official UK Singles Chart.
On 20 January 2009, it was announced that Cilmi was nominated in the International Female category at the BRIT Awards.

On January 31 2009, Cilmi sang in the Rod Laver Arena before the 2009 Australian Open Men's Final; she sang two songs, one of which was her top hit, Sweet About Me.
Cilmi performed at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 14 March 2009 for Sound Relief, which was a multi-venue rock music concert in support of relief for the Victorian Bushfire Crisis.. She performed on a Dutch tv show called Life & Cooking a duet with Enrique Iglesias. They performed a duet verion of his song Takin' Back My Love. She will also be playing a role in the Disney original series Sonny with a Chance portraying Sonny's childhood friend for two episodes.
